Microsoft hints at Windows Phone version of Remote Desktop app coming soon

While most of the focus has been centered on the official launch of Window 8.1, Microsoft also recently rolled out the Remote Desktop app for Android and iOS. The announcement, referred to in an official press release, means that users from other platforms can now get the Windows desktop experience on their phones and tablets. An intriguing part of the announcement, though, was the fact the company did not say anything about a Windows Phone version being rolled out. The company has now confirmed with The Next Web that a Windows Phone app is indeed in the works. There was no work on when users can expect the same, though. In a statement, a Microsoft spokesperson said, “Remote desktop on phones is a relatively rare usage scenario. That said; we are working on a version of the app for Windows Phone. We’ll be able to share timeframe at a later point in time.” So what does this app do exactly? As the name suggests, the remote desktop client allows the user to connect with a remote PC on-the-go. While the company is primarily looking at business users who want to be able to access their work wherever they are, normal users can also pick the app for their personal use.

The app comes with a list of features, which states that Android and iOS users will have access to remote resources through the Remote Desktop Gateway. They will also be able to get the multi-touch experience with remote desktop protocol and RemoteFX that supports Windows gestures. The remote desktop client will also provide a secure connection to the user’s data and applications through Network Layer Authentication (NLA) technology. The iOS app, in the list of features, states that users will have “Easy connection to external monitors or projectors for presentations”. This is not mentioned in the Android app description, although it has still not been confirmed if the feature will be rolled out in an update later on, or if the company has just not mentioned it. While Microsoft has been offering remote access to Windows PCs and Macs for years, this is the first time that we have seen the feature being rolled out for mobile devices that aren’t running one of its operating systems. It should be noted, though, that the Windows PC that the user wants to access will also need to be running Remote Desktop but as a host. You can check out how to set the system up on the company’s official website. The free app can be downloaded from Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
