LG begins producing curved batteries for mobiles and wearables

LG, and all the divisions under its fold, seem to be gearing up to mass-produce components for its upcoming curved display smartphone. LG Chem, one of the divisions in question, has now announced that it has begun the mass production of curved batteries. The new battery refers to a power pack that will fuel devices with curved or flexible designs. The company has said that the application of this new technology can be seen not just on phones, but in smartwatches or other wearables like glasses. LG is making use of its patented "Stack & Folding technology" to reduce the physical stress generated while achieving the curved design of the new battery packs. With the mass production underway, LG has now said that the new product will be used to power the next generation of LG’s smartphone line-up.

But the official release did not limit itself to just this category of power packs, though. Along with curved batteries, the company also said that it is working to mass produce another category of batteries called “Cable Battery”. This technology, according to the company, will be used in devices that are bendable, wearable or can “even be tied in a knot”. The new technology, designed to use low amounts of electricity, will not heat up even if the device it is powering is put to use for long periods of time. The new power pack is also said to be waterproof, thereby increasing its usability in a number of wearable gadgets. Mass production of this new category, though, will begin in the “upcoming years.”Yesterday, LG's display unit announced the mass production of the world’s first 6-inch flexible OLED panels. The new panels are said to be built on plastic substrates and are vertically concave from top to bottom. They will also come with a bend radius of 700mm, and each panel is just 0.44mm thick. While there is no official word yet about when the curved display smartphone will be seen, reports have speculated that LG may be looking at a November launch. It could very well also feature the new curved battery packs.
