Breaking Bad finale smashes ratings and piracy records

Even before it aired, it was common knowledge that the Breaking Bad series finale was going to be the event of the season on television. What was not expected was the number of records the series broke with its final episode. According to network AMC, not only did 10.3 million viewers tune-in to watch Breaking Bad come to an end, it also clocked 500,000 pirated downloads, not even a couple of days since it aired. According to a report by TorrentFreak, Breaking Bad’s series finale was pirated a record 500,000 times within the first 12 hours of the show appearing online. This officially makes Felina the most downloaded episode from the entire series in all.

TorrentFreak does mention that while there were plenty options in most countries around the world to download or view the episode legally, people turned to grabbing the video via torrents. Australia turned out to be the country with the most number of donwloads despite having Breaking Bad available on pay TV network Foxtel. In the US and UK too, Netflix failed to curb pirates despite having the series available legally. Unsurprisingly, India made it to number five in the list of countries that downloaded the episode illegally. It is understandable that India would clock in 5.1 percent of the total share of downloads since it is one of the only countries in the list that is not up-to-speed with the rest of the world as far as the storyline of Breaking Bad goes. The series has just started to air on TV here in India but most people have already turned to torrents to download the entire series and watch it.

The Verge also reported that over 10 million viewers in the US tuned in to watch the last episode on AMC. The series finale eclipsed that of Dexter’s earlier this month that saw only 6.1 million users tune in. The network has also reported that 1.24 million tweets from over 601,000 different users were made with reference to Breaking Bad during the broadcast in the US. While the journey of the most-loved and much acclaimed series may have come to an end, Breaking Bad fans need not lose heart. A spinoff series called Better Call Saul is in the works already and will hopefully smash some of the records set by Breaking Bad.
