Apple updates iMac with Haswell processors, faster SSDs and 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Apple has just announced a refresh of its iMac desktop computer range, adding new processors, faster Wi-Fi and faster solid state storage to the svelte all-in-one.

The news came as something of a surprise, as Apple usually uses its press conferences to reveal major upgrades, but the iPhone 5s launch came and went without an update. Instead, the company kept the announcement quiet, simply updating its website with the new hardware over lunch.

You can now buy an entry-level 21.5in iMac with an Intel 4th Generation Core i5 processor running at 2.7GHz, paired with Iris integrated graphics, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard disk. The top spec model can be equipped with a 3.1Ghz quad-core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics and either a solid state disk or hybrid Fusion drive.

Internally, the Wi-Fi module has been upgraded to support 802.11ac, but otherwise it remains the same as the 2012 iMac with a 1,920x1,080 resolution display, Thunderbolt connectivity and an incredibly svelte design.

The 27in model, meanwhile, starts with a 3.2GHz quad-core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB mechanical hard disk and an Nvidia GeForce GT 755M graphics card. It too can be upgraded to a 3.5GHz Core i7, up to 32GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB of video memory and up to 1TB of flash storage or a 3TB Fusion drive.

It keeps the same gorgeous 27in, 2,560x1,440 display we loved in the 27in model we reviewed last year, but adds 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Both machines ship with OS X Mountain Lion, with prices starting from £1,149 for the 21.5in model or £1,599 for the 27in. Start adding on upgrades and the price can quickly skyrocket. Both are available to buy through the Apple store today.
