Apple jumps over Coca-Cola to become world's most valuable brand

The importance of technology and the companies catering to that segment seems to be ever increasing. Apple has now overtaken global heavyweight Coca-Cola to become the world’s most valuable brand in the world, according to the annual Best Global Brands report compiled by Interbrand. This is the first time in 13 years that the latter has not featured in the top slot of the list. The soft drink maker has now slipped to number 3 in the listing, being overtaken by both the iPhone maker as well as search engine giant Google, which has now claimed the No. 2 spot on the list. The 2013 report, while talking about this, says that “Every so often, a company changes our lives, not just with its products, but with its ethos. This is why, following Coca-Cola’s 13-year run at the top of Best Global Brands, Interbrand has a new No. 1 — Apple.”The report states that the estimated value of Apple stands at $98.3 billion. This is a massive 28 percent increase from what was reported in 2012. Google has also risen from the fourth place in the list last year to its current position in 2013. The top ten list is an interesting read because it features five technology companies. Apart from Apple and Google, software giant Microsoft is also featured at number 5, South Korean company Samsung at number 8 and Intel at number 9. While Microsoft’s position remains unchanged from last year, Samsung has moved up one ring from the ninth position last year while Intel fell a ring from the eighth position it had enjoyed in 2012.

IBM now stands in the fourth position this year, down a notch from 2012. However, the company has been ranked as a business services brand. Facebook has also been bumped up on the list, now holding the 52nd position, up from the 69th position it had held last year. 2012 was the first time the social network was seen on evaluation list, and it has registered a steady growth since then.Other brands have, unfortunately, not done so well. Struggling smartphone maker BlackBerry, which last saw a fall to the 93rd position in 2011, has now disappeared completely from the list. Nokia, which at one point was a strong player in the mobile phone market, finished up at the 57th position this year, the “biggest faller among the 100” according to the report.
